In an interview following the game’s reveal between current Santa Monica head of creative (and God of War II and God of War 2018 director) Cory Barlog and God of War Laufey director Ariel Lawrence, the two confirmed Kratos’ journey is not over. “There’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history,” Barlog said, and Lawrence followed up with, “We can’t not tell stories about the big guy.” But God of War Laufey is the first mainline God of War game to not star the angry Greek man. Instead, it follows Kratos’ departed wife, Laufey, whom we only met in memory in God of War Ragnarök, as she goes on an unexpected but remarkably intriguing journey.

“Faye is dead and she finds herself in the afterlife of the gods,” Lawrence says. “And there she discovers some things that make her question whether Kratos and Atreus are safe, and she’s determined to find a way back to help them.” The reveal of the game, showcasing an impressive 20 minutes of gameplay, picks up in God of War 2018’s opening with Faye’s (as she is typically referred to) body being burned on a funeral pyre. As her ashes float to the sky, she awakes in the afterlife, surrounded by what appear to be fairies.
