To hear designer Dennis Brännvall describe it, Wyldheart is a game rooted in its developers’ love of some very particular gaming experiences. After years spent crafting triple-A games for the likes of DICE and BioWare, the small team at Wayfinder Studios is looking to craft an RPG for friends and families who like to play together, whenever and however the chance arises to meet up. “In particular, it combined this love of older school RPGs, like early Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2, old school D&D or tabletop games from the ’80s and the ’90s, and a blend with early 2000 MMOs,” Brännvall says.

The result is Wyldheart, a charming action/RPG currently marching its way through alpha and toward a release into early access, potentially by the end of this year. Like the games Brännvall cites, Wyldheart lets you craft a character, start a campaign, and then have friends pop in and out at their leisure. Once a player joins a campaign, they gain a certain level of control over its advancement; if the host leaves, another player in the group can keep it going. If everyone closes out, any combination of existing players can start back up and keep going. The whole thing is built around ease of interaction and keeping the fun going.
