Especially in the tabletop world, ambitious projects commonly pursue the crowdfunding model. It makes sense; with physical components, complex production needs, and an always-uncertain sense of how the community might receive a project, it’s reasonable to get a lay of the land before finalizing print runs and setting comprehensive production plans. It’s also common to set a modest starting goal, in hopes of surpassing it to at least reach a small audience.

But by any measure, Avantris Entertainment’s Neon Odyssey overshot expectations. After rocketing past its baseline goal in seconds, this 3rd-party D&D campaign setting ultimately became the most-funded tabletop RPG Kickstarter in history, drawing in over $16 million from fans eager to see it brought to life.
