The Future Of Assassin’s Creed

Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The series’ history has been led by over a dozen games, along with comics, novels, films, and more. Amid a major reorganization of its broader business efforts, Ubisoft is going out of its way to suggest there’s plenty still ahead for the now venerable series.

That message seemed to underlie a pair of announcements in recent weeks. The first highlighted a new leadership team tasked with shepherding the Animus into the future: Martin Schelling (head of Assassin’s Creed brand), Jean Guesdon (head of content), and François de Billy (head of production excellence) are all notable development talents from across the franchise’s history. Their leadership roles seem purposefully established to connect the future to what has come before and ensure continuity.

The larger announcements came a few days later, with a slew of smaller updates about several upcoming Assassin’s Creed projects. That’s in contrast with the common practice (for this series and others) of focusing on the specific next title currently being prepared for release, and instead clarifying that multiple games are all in active development, perhaps as a further effort to communicate the strength and continuing potential for new stories in the fiction.
