Coming Of Age With A Crescendo
You interview a wide variety of people as a writer for Game Informer. There are buttoned-up businessmen, nervous indie developers, charming voice actors, and everything in between. When I interview Johnny Galvatron, who’s simultaneously a musician, the founder of Beethoven & Dinosaur, and the game director for Mixtape, he sits in a category all his own.
It’s 8 a.m. in Australia (where he calls me from), and in the sunny, blurred background, his wife gets their son ready for school. Meanwhile, Galvatron wears an MTV jacket with bright red and yellow sleeves and black sunglasses. Halfway through our conversation, in which he’s passionate and confident about his upcoming game, he calls out the outfit and jokingly admits, “I’ve been wearing the sunglasses less. I’m trying to grow up a little.”
I quietly sort Galvatron into a new category of interviewee: earnest rock star. It’s the exact genre of energy one would need to make a game like Mixtape.
